Families
Two new schools will be built at Hobsonville Point. The new primary school will cater for years 1 – 8 and will open in term one 2013. The new secondary school will open for year 9 in term one 2014. Each school will include land for early childhood education facilities and further early childhood centres have been allowed for in the first development precinct. The schools will be the heart of the new community with local children able to walk or cycle to them. The buildings for both new schools will be delivered by the Ministry of Education under a public private partnership (PPP). The Ministry has appointed a joint establishment board for the two schools to oversee and help set up the new schools. You can keep up to date with the progress of the schools via the Ministry of Education’s website which includes regular newsletters about the schools.
Community
The Sunderland Lounge, a large character air force hall, is already available for community use. It is suitable for large functions, community meetings and classes. There are existing tennis courts and a playground, and plenty of space to walk the dog. Together with the brand new Hobsonville Point Park, this provides opportunities for neighbours to meet informally. Hobsonville Land Company and AVJennings will also plan regular events for people to meet. Read on
Businesses
There are already several businesses on site including boat builders and the Catalina Café. You can read more about on-site businesses here.
A supermarket and retail area are proposed by a commercial developer at an expanded Hobsonville Village at the western end of the site, with other shopping at places like Westgate or at Albany.
Areas within the first development precinct are set aside for retail and other non-residential activities. The first is fronting Hobsonville Point Park, the second is near the secondary school. Later precincts will provide for convenience, café and other retail appropriate to the range of activities on site, from residential to employment and lifestyle.
Larger retail will be available initially at Westgate or Albany, and then later at the expanded Hobsonville Village shopping centre, which will be the main retail area adjacent to Hobsonville Point.
