Families

A primary school and secondary school, along with early childhood education are planned for Hobsonville Point. Tertiary and trade education opportunities are also emerging in response to the broadband and range of activities on site. The primary school will be for children from the Hobsonville Point development itself; the secondary would serve a wider regional area. Depending on the growth of population in the development, the Ministry of Education’s indicative opening date for the schools is 2013. A secondary school site at the western end of the CDP area is already owned by the Ministry of Education while the purchase of land for a new primary school at the eastern extent of the CDP area has been agreed with the Ministry.

Construction of schools and the timing of opening is a matter for the Ministry but will be co-ordinated with the progress of the Buckley precinct. This also includes the Hobsonville Land Company working with the Ministry and Waitakere Council on aspects such as shared use of playing fields. Provision has been made for two daycare centres within the CDP area and the school sites will provide space for an additional 3 early childhood education centres.

Community

The Sunderland Lounge, a large character air force hall, is already available for community use.  It is suitable for large functions, community meetings and classes.  There are existing tennis courts and a playground, and plenty of space to walk the dog.  Together with the brand new Linear Park, this will provide opportunites for neighbours to meet informally.  Hobsonville Land Company and AVJennings will also plan regular events for people to meet.

Businesses

Local convenience shops like a corner store, a hairdresser, a bakery along with cafes and more, are planed at the waterfront. A supermarket and retail area are proposed by a commercial developer at an expanded Hobsonville Village at the western end of the site, with other shopping at places like Westgate or at Albany.

Areas within the first development area are set aside for retail and other non-residential activities. The first is fronting the proposed Linear Park, the second is near the secondary school. Later precincts will provide for convenience, café and other retail appropriate to the range of activities on site, from residential to employment and lifestyle.

Larger retail will be available initially at Westgate or Albany, and then later at the expanded Hobsonville Village shopping centre, which will be the main retail area adjacent to Hobsonville Point.
